What to Expect During Your First Psychiatric Medication Appointment

While I’m not a psychiatrist, I provide similar services as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, including comprehensive evaluations and medication management.

Starting Psychiatric Treatment Can Feel Overwhelming — Whether you're joining your appointment from home in New Hampshire or Maine, my goal is to make your first visit as comfortable and supportive as possible. If you're considering medication management for your mental health, here’s a quick look at what your first appointment with me typically includes. For more information on preparing for your appointment, NAMI provides a comprehensive guide that outlines what to expect and how to make the most of your visit.

Here's what to expect from me:

1. A Warm, Judgment-Free Conversation

First and foremost, we’ll talk. You’ll have a chance to share what’s been going on — whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, mood changes, focus issues, or something else. I approach each session with compassion, not judgment.

2. Looking at Your History to Guide Mental Health Medication Choices

To make the best decisions together, I’ll ask about:

  • Past or current mental health symptoms

  • Any previous psychiatric diagnoses or treatments

  • Medications you’ve tried before (and how they worked for you)

  • Family history of mental health concerns

  • Your physical health, sleep, appetite, and energy

We’ll also review your current lifestyle, substance use (if applicable), and any major stressors or life changes.

3. Mental Health Medication Education and Options — Not Pressure

If medication seems like a helpful option, I’ll explain how it works, possible side effects, and what to expect. You’ll always have the opportunity to ask questions and take time to think things over.

If you're not sure whether you're ready to try medication, that’s okay too. My approach is collaborative — I’ll never push you into anything you're uncomfortable with.

4. Next Steps After Your Mental Health Medication Visit:

  • I’ll send your prescription to your preferred pharmacy (if appropriate)

  • We’ll set a time to check in, usually within a few weeks

If medication isn’t the right fit, we may explore other options, including lifestyle supports, therapy referrals, or a combination of approaches.
