Understanding the Causes of Mental Health Challenges: It’s Not Just One Thing

Mental Health Is Complex, and So Are the Causes

“Your experiences, your genetics, your stressors, it all matters. And it’s all valid.”

When it comes to mental health, there’s no one-size-fits-all explanation. People often ask me, “Why do I feel this way?”, and it’s an incredibly important question. But the answer is rarely simple.

Mental health challenges can be rooted in a mix of biological, psychological, environmental, and social factors. Understanding these layers helps reduce shame, remove blame, and open the door to compassionate care.

Biological Factors: The Brain and Body Connection

Our brains are complex. Chemistry, genetics, and overall physical health all play a role in our emotional well-being. Some individuals may be more vulnerable to depression, anxiety, or other conditions due to their family history or differences in how their brain regulates mood-related chemicals.

This doesn’t mean your mental health is “out of your control." It means biology may be part of the picture, and understanding that can help us make informed treatment decisions, like considering medication or supportive therapies.

Psychological Factors: Your Inner Landscape

Past experiences, trauma, thought patterns, and how we process emotions can all influence mental health. For example, someone with perfectionist tendencies may be more prone to anxiety, while someone who has experienced childhood trauma may face ongoing emotional struggles in adulthood.

Part of my work is helping patients notice the stories they've been telling themselves and understand how those stories shape thier mood, confidence, and choices.

Environmental Factors: The Space Around You

Where you live, your access to healthcare, financial security, work conditions, and even the amount of sunlight you get can deeply affect your mental health. These aren’t just “stressful situations," they can have real and lasting effects on your brain and body.

If you’ve been navigating a tough environment, it’s not just in your head. It’s in your nervous system, your sleep patterns, and your ability to focus. Seeking support is the brave next step to feeling better.

Social Factors: Relationships and Belonging

Humans are wired for connection. Loneliness, social rejection, ongoing conflict, or even the pressure to “keep up” can deeply impact our emotional well-being. On the flip side, safe and supportive relationships can be a powerful part of healing.

Many of my patients find relief just by being seen and heard in a non-judgmental space, because feeling disconnected or misunderstood often makes symptoms worse.
